The Stones had seen the Sixties’ utopian dream of peace and love and community proven false at Altamont—not that they ever really bought into all that hippie hoo-ha. You add to that the nonstop swirl of fame and celebrity and overindulgence, and you have a group of musicians in a very dark place, struggling to get out. The Beatles are in a place of artistic frustration, and yet they still remain—with the exception of Lennon, when he’s flashing his mean and cynical streaks—a relatively sunny pop band. I mean, there is no “Rocky Racoon” on Exile on Main St.!

As Keith Moerer wrote in a book I edited called Kill Your Idols, it’s hard to talk about Exile and not sound as if you’re glorifying the druggie decadence of the record. A lot of people would not survive the kind of abuse that the Rolling Stones had put themselves through, and it’s one of the most destructive lies in rock history that you have to live that life of excess in order to make great art. So one thing I want to make clear is that, in lauding the sound and the vibe and the themes of a search for redemption on this record, I’m not championing the way the band was living in order to get there, and it really is a miracle that most of the group is still alive!
